Batman is a superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman that was released in 2022. It is a reboot of the Batman film franchise, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Matt Reeves directed the picture, and he co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig. Along with Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell, it stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman. Batman, who has been combating crime in Gotham City for two years, uncovers corruption while chasing down the Riddler (Dano), a serial murderer who preys on the city's wealth.
After Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) in 2013, development began. Affleck agreed to direct, produce, co-write, and appear in The Batman, but then stepped out due to concerns about the film. Reeves took over and rewrote the plot, erasing any references to the DCEU. He drew influence from Alfred Hitchcock's films and the New Hollywood era, as well as comics like Year One (1987), The Long Halloween (1996–97), and Ego (1997–98) to explore Batman's investigative side more than prior films (2000). Pattinson was cast in May of this year, with further casting to follow in late 2019. Between January 2020 and March 2021, principal photography took place in the United Kingdom and Chicago.

On March 1, 2022, The Batman premiered at Lincoln Center in New York, and on March 4, 2022, it was released theatrically across the world. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed twice from its original June 2021 release date. Despite a budget of $185–200 million, the picture made nearly $770 million, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2022. The performances, soundtrack, photography, Reeves' directing, action sequences, and plot were all praised, while the duration was criticized. With two sequels planned and two spin-off television shows in production for HBO Max, The Batman is set to start a Batman-shared world.
On Halloween, Gotham City mayor Don Mitchell Jr. is assassinated by the Riddler, a masked maniac. Bruce Wayne, a reclusive millionaire who has been operating as the vigilante Batman for two years, is investigating the murder with the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD). Lieutenant James Gordon discovers a note left for Batman by the Riddler. The Riddler kills Commissioner Pete Savage the next night and leaves another message for Batman.

Colson is kidnapped by the Riddler, who straps a timed collar bomb to his neck and sends him to disrupt Mitchell's funeral. When Batman arrives, the Riddler calls him on Colson's phone, threatening to explode the bomb unless Colson can solve three riddles. Colson dies after refusing to answer the final question—the identity of the informant who provided the GCPD with information that led to a major narcotics arrest that put an end to gangster Salvatore Maroni's organization. The Penguin may be the informant, so Batman and Gordon pursue him down to a heroin trade. They learn that Maroni's operation has been handed to Falcone, with a large number of corrupt GCPD personnel engaged. When Selina arrives to steal money and discovers Annika's body in a vehicle trunk, she unwittingly exposes them.
Following the Riddler's trail, Batman and Gordon arrive at the remains of an orphanage founded by Bruce's dead parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, where they find that the Riddler has a vendetta against the Waynes. Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce's butler and carer gets hospitalized after opening a mail bomb meant for Bruce. The Riddler reveals that Thomas, who was campaigning for mayor at the time of his death, paid Falcone to assassinate a journalist for threatening to disclose facts about Martha and her family's mental illness history. Bruce confronts Alfred, who claims that Thomas just wanted Falcone to intimidate the journalist into silence and that Thomas intended to turn himself and Falcone over to the authorities once he discovered Falcone murdered the journalist instead. To avoid this, Alfred believes Falcone assassinated Thomas and Martha.
